What to do with Your Fear of Being an Underachiever

August 20th, 2008 § 0

Have you ever compared yourself to people that seem to be so far ahead of you? Maybe you’re looking at people in your company, your business field, your competitors and you see yourself as not as successful. Or maybe you are comparing your love situation to people that seem to be so happy and enjoying a romantic life, when these things seemed to be beyond your grasp.
Thoughts like these are often closely followed by ruminating over your past. All the mistakes you may have made, the things you may not have achieved. The experiences you missed out on. How far behind you seem to be.

If anything of this is familiar to you, you have stumbled onto some of your own limiting beliefs. They are stopping you from moving forward.

The good news is…They are just beliefs! And beliefs are just the result of your mind thinking things over and over again that at some point had a logical reason when it first occurred. The wonderful thing is you can change the way your mind thinks by providing new reasons.

I know I had all kinds of these thoughts and beliefs. In fact I was beating myself up for being an underachiever and not taking action when I could have in the past. This does not do wonders for your self esteem. In fact, the more you do this, the poorer you will feel and the worse you will perform.

So I knew this was a very important belief to change around. Life is too short to be disproportionately critical of yourself. No one becomes a better person by being critical of themselves. Now is the time to start being your own best friend and adopt new beliefs that will inspire and change your life for the better. The effects will be so good and the positive effect you will have on the people around you, will amaze yourself.

The belief we are wanting to put to rest that you’re in any way behind the curve. The first thing to know on an intellectual level is that you should compare yourself to you, and not to anyone else. Comparing yourself to anybody else is like comparing Michael Schumacher losing position in the second lap of a 60 lap race to Michael Jordan shooting the game winning shot in his final playoff appearance in a bulls uniform. It makes no sense.

So now what remains is something you feel might were true and I’m referring to that feeling for not being in the place you want to be and having missed out or underachieved in life. This belief brings about a distinct feeling, that you can change around. To help get a fix on this, it is helpful to:

Imagine what it would be like to be far ahead and know that you are doing extremely well.

You are right on track, everything you’ve done up till now was from a larger perspective right on cue and in perfect order.

What happens when you explore that feeling right now?

One of the most profound things you can know today, is that you can trust your life. Whatever place you are in, you are in the right place. The most important things you can really know and really feel pulsing as a truth, is that you can trust your life and you are doing perfectly as you are. Beliefs don’t come much more profound than that. And I tell you, it’s not just a belief – it’s a spiritual truth.
