The Difference Between Trying To Make Money And Aiming To Build Wealth

June 25th, 2010 § 0

One of the most notorious of wealthy people has to be Donald Trump. What boggles my mind is that he has had debts in the nine billion dollar range. But despite the debts, you still think of him as wealthy. Even though he had more debts than a gym full of graduated college students combined.

That is because money and wealth are not the same thing. Money comes and goes. Wealth grows or decays, but its natural proclivity is toward growth.

Two of my favorite quotes in your life your legacy are:

“Wealth is not how much money you have, Wealth is what you’re left with when you lose all your money.”

And

“True wealth lies in your power to give and receive at your full potential.”

Wealth is like a patch of soil. You can attract the most beautiful butterflies and the most industrious bees if you have flowers growing. You can grow any plants providing you sow, nurture and harvest.
Wealth is all about sowing, nurturing and harvesting at the right time.

Most people when they go looking for money, they leave their patch of soil and go hunting. They might come back with money, but sure enough, to get more money, they will have to go out again the next day if they want to keep it going.

Building wealth is like cultivating that patch of soil. Laying new plants. Taking out the weeds. Or in the real world, it is about the meaningful relationships you can build with people and the value you provide. The more you provide, the more you get, the more you get, the more you can give.

An unfortunate truth is, to have new plants grow, you need to control the weeds. In real life that means taking out the elements that are keeping you from your success. The bad habits, the bad ideas, the bad beliefs and the people that aren’t supporting your wealth, health and growth.

When we go hunting for money, we forget about our patch of soil. The weeds continue to grow, no new plants grow, our patch doesn’t get any more abundant or beautiful. If we want to build a beautiful garden from our patch of soil…become a constant gardener.

In the making-money-from-home industry one of the pittfals is thinking with a hunter mindset. That gets us to chase magic bullets to fast money, affirm a zero sum game and exploit tactics that work only for short periods of time and in general put us on the wrong footing. You can’t build a sustainable income online if you think that way. You’ve got to adopt a gardener mindset to be successful on the long term. Then you will pick your strategy first, your tactics second. You will play a long haul game and focus more on the value and the relationships you can build. You will focus more on giving than getting. And that leads to building wealth online.
